January 1st the California Legislature took another step toward expanding housing opportunities when SB 1211 went into effect. This new law removes key barriers to building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on multifamily properties.
ADUs have already played a major role in addressing California’s housing shortage, with over 80,000 built in the last seven years. However, many multifamily properties have been limited in how many ADUs they could add, despite having available space.
SB 1211 changes that by increasing the cap on detached ADUs from 2 to up to 8, depending on the size of the existing multifamily housing.
This means property owners can better utilize vacant lots, unused parking areas, and other underutilized spaces to add much-needed housing. For developers and property owners looking to maximize their investment, this bill creates new opportunities to boost property value and rental income.
At TurboPermit, we specialize in streamlining the permitting process, making it easier and faster for developers to take advantage of these new regulations. Our technology-enabled platform ensures that projects move efficiently from planning to approval, saving time and money.
